November 22 is National Housing Day
Nov 20, 2024
On November 22, the Canadian Mental Health Association Nova Scotia Division [CMHA NS Division] joins communities and organizations nationwide to mark National Housing Day.
Access to adequate, stable, affordable housing is a basic human need and critical for experiencing good mental health.
In Canada, housing is considered “affordable” if it costs less than 30% of a household’s before-tax income. But affordable housing isn’t just limited to government-subsidized rental units. It includes housing from the private, public, and non-profit sectors, across all forms of tenure: rental, ownership, co-operative ownership, and more.
At CMHA Nova Scotia Division, we work with community partners to push for more investments in housing and to reduce the barriers that prevent people from accessing safe, sustainable, and affordable homes.
This work is essential in reducing overall costs to healthcare, police, justice, and social services.
Through Project H.O.P.E., we’re helping Nova Scotians in Kings, Annapolis, and Digby Counties who are homeless or at risk of homelessness secure and maintain safe, affordable housing.
How we help
The Project H.O.P.E. and Annapolis Valley Coordinated Access System (AVCAS) work together to support homeless or at-risk individuals in Kings, Annapolis, Colchester and Digby Counties.
Project H.O.P.E. helps clients secure safe, affordable housing, offering case management, eviction prevention, and Trustee Services for those struggling with budgeting and bill payments, ensuring long-term housing stability.
AVCAS uses a person-centered approach to prioritize individuals based on their needs and risk of re-entering homelessness. By collaborating with community partners, it simplifies access to essential services.
Together, these programs connect individuals to housing and provide the support needed to maintain it, preventing future homelessness.
Join us in supporting efforts to ensure everyone has access to a home.
