June is pride month
May 30, 2023
The Canadian Mental Health Association Nova Scotia Division joins individuals and organizations around the world in celebrating the history, courage and diversity of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning and Two-Spirit (2SLGBTQIA+) individuals throughout the month of June, which is recognized internationally as Pride Month.

Historically, Pride gatherings emerged from the first large-scale protests for 2SLGBTQIA+ rights. In Canada, the first demonstrations took place in Ottawa and Vancouver in 1971.
By 1973, Pride events were held in several Canadian cities, including Montréal, Ottawa, Saskatoon, Toronto, Vancouver and Winnipeg. Toronto’s Pride weekend in June is now among the largest Pride events in North America.
This Pride Season, show your support and get involved!
- Connect with 2SLGBTQIA+ loved ones, neighbours, and friends and get to know the 2SLGBTQIA+ seniors in your life.
- Support 2SLGBTQIA+-owned businesses and consider donating to or volunteering with an 2SLGBTQIA+ organization
- Stay up to date on the Government of Canada’s work to promote equality for 2SLGBTQIA+ communities by visiting the 2SLGBTQI+ Secretariat
During Pride month and all year round, it’s important to note that 2SLGBTQIA+ communities continue to face stigma, prejudice and other forms of marginalization – such as racism, sexism, poverty or other factors – alongside homophobia or transphobia that negatively impact mental health.
We have assembled some resources so that you can learn about, celebrate and better support 2SLGBTQIA+ people in your community.
