Walking outdoors is one of the best things you can do to support your mental health. It has been proven to almost instantly improve our mood and relax us.
But during these dreary days, staying warm and cozy on our couches feels like a more appealing option.
Despite the call of the couch, Catherine Drosebeck, of NS Walks, says the colder winter days are when we actually need that activity the most.
Research shows that winter exercise boosts immunity during cold and flu season, reduce fatigue and enhance job satisfaction), promote optimism, self-esteem and better stress management.
Exercise can also be an effective tool to help manage depression and anxiety.
But many Canadians also struggle to stay motivated to get outdoors and remain active during the winter months. Catherine suggests getting a walking buddy to help each other stay motivated — she even created a group to facilitated that!
On January 26, Catherine will be highlighting the mental health benefits of walking outdoors, some of which may surprise you, during Walking for the Mind, Body and Soul.
Walking for the Body, Mind and Soul is being offered through our Thrive program in collaboration with Hike Nova Scotia.
During the workshop, Catherine will also outline NS Walks, a project of Hike Nova Scotia that aims to create social support and increase opportunities for people who are currently less active to enjoy the benefits of walking.
Walking for the Body, Mind and Soul will be held on Zoom on January 26 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.
