Save the Date: Mental Health Week is May 5 -11

From May 5 – 11 the Canadian Mental Health Association Nova Scotia Division recognizes Mental Health Week, an annual awareness and advocacy campaign that focuses on mental health.

This years’ theme is Unmasking Mental Health.

About this theme:  Living with mental health challenges often forces people to hide behind a “mask” to protect themselves from judgement and discrimination. But the heavier the stigma, the heavier the mask becomes, and the more isolated we feel.

Feeling safe to unmask and be one’s true self can promote resilience. Kindness and understanding from neurotypical people in response can also go a long way.

However, the burden of change shouldn’t all be on the individual. Society has a role to play—to be more inclusive and accepting, and to create environments in which people with mental illness can thrive without hiding their authentic selves.

This May 5-11, we will encourage people across Nova Scotia to look beyond the surface and see the whole person. By encouraging authenticity and ensuring people feel safe to be themselves, we open the door to deeper connections and the mental health benefits that come with it.
