Game Nights with the MHL: A Win for Mental Health

As winter takes hold, there’s no better way to warm your heart than by cheering on your local Maritime Junior Hockey League (MJHL) team while supporting an important cause.

This season, the MJHL is teaming up with the Canadian Mental Health Association Nova Scotia Division (CMHA-NS) for an exciting series of Talk Today Game Nights—an initiative aimed at raising awareness and fostering open conversations about mental health.

Talk Today Game Nights are special events where MJHL teams dedicate their games to mental health awareness, part of a broader campaign aimed at reducing the stigma surrounding mental health and suicide prevention.

As part of their participation in Talk Today, each team is hosting a community event at one home game to show its support for mental health and raise awareness about CMHA mental health programs in the community.

See below to find out when your local team is hosting its event.

What is Talk Today

Mental health affects us all, and in the world of sports, it’s especially crucial to have open discussions. Talk Today is one of the most comprehensive mental health programs for amateur sports in Canada. The program provides players with the tools they need to recognize mental health challenges, access resources, and offer support to their teammates. Through mental health training, including suicide prevention workshops, players are better equipped to address these issues—both on and off the ice.

Each participating MJHL team is paired with a CMHA Mental Health Coach who offers ongoing support and resources to players, staff, and the broader community. These coaches are there to help guide individuals toward the help they need, ensuring that no one has to face their mental health struggles alone.

Talk Today in generously funded by the Fifth Line Foundation and NHL Foundation. For more information about Talk Today, visit www.talktoday.ca.
