JOB POSTING: Peer Support Coordinator
JOB DESCRIPTION: As a member of the Education and Training department, the Peer Support
Coordinator will be responsible for the Peer Support Incubation Hub and the Thrive Learning Centre.
This role includes, but is not limited to, developing, implementing and managing the Peer Support
Incubation Hub and ongoing management of the Thrive Learning Centre.
ABOUT OUR EDUCATION AND TRAINING TEAM: The Education and Training team at CMHA-NS are a tightly-knit team dedicated to providing all Nova Scotians with accessible and relevant wellness programs. They support a broad catalogue of programs and experiences, including THRIVE Learning Centre for Mental Wellness and Wellbeing, Resilient Minds, ASIST, Changing Minds and Mental Health in the Workplace. They are also responsible for the design and delivery of custom programming at organizations across the province.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: The key responsibilities includes but is not limited to the following:
- Recruitment and support of a Peer Support Incubator Advisory Group and Thrive Learning Centre Advisory Committee
- Ongoing Development of Community Partnerships:
- Collaborate with community organizations, healthcare providers, and other stakeholders to promote and expand peer support services.
- Advocate for the value of peer support within the broader community and mental health sector.
- Coordinate a Community of Practice for Peer Support Facilitators
Program Development and Management - Develop and implement peer support programs in alignment with organizational goals.
- Monitor and evaluate program effectiveness, making necessary adjustments to improve service delivery.
- Maintain accurate records and reports related to program activities and outcomes.
- Maintain the development and delivery of mental wellness programming on the Thrive Learning Centre.
- Peer Support Facilitator and Mental Health Education Training:
- Recruit, train, and supervise peer support facilitators.
- In coordination with our community partners develop and deliver training sessions on peer support principles, mental health awareness, and effective communication skills.
- Provide ongoing professional development opportunities for peer supporters. – Provide and track assessments for peer support groups.
- Deliver CMHA NS Education’s Core Modules of Mental Health Training
- Support Coordination of Community Peer Support Groups:
- Where appropriate support in grant applications. – Coordinate marketing and promotion of Community Peer Support Groups.
- Administration:
- Develop and manage the Peer Support Incubator Hub program budget.
- Ensure compliance with organizational policies and procedures, as well as relevant legal and ethical standards.
- Prepare regular reports on program status, outcomes, and impact for internal and external stakeholders.
- Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:

- Experience related to community mental health and wellness.
- Experience in group facilitation.
- Experience developing educational content
- Experience working with NGOs, community-based organizations, interest groups and
- government.
- Relevant experience working/volunteering with equity seeking communities
- Familiarity with the mental health system in Nova Scotia. Lived experience with mental illness is
- considered an asset.
- Clearance on criminal record and vulnerable sector check.
- Post-secondary education in the field of human services or equivalent combination of education
- and working experience.
- Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience in mental health services, peer support, or a
- related area. Experience in program coordination or management is preferred.
PREFERRED SKILLS/COMPETENCIES:
● Mental Health – Strong understanding of mental health issues and recovery principles.
● Programming – Experience with program and curriculum development as well as appreciation
and knowledge of program evaluation principles and processes.
● EDIRA – Strong understanding of EDIRA principles and able to incorporate into programs.
● People Management – Ability to train, supervise, and motivate peer support partners.
● Self-Management – Strong organizational and time-management skills and ability to initiate self
management.
● Strong Communicator – Strong interpersonal and communication skills (virtual, in person, print)
● Community Builder – Ability to strategize and plan outreach to garner community engagement.
● Training – Facilitation experience and understanding of adult learning principles.
● Problem Solver – Ability to solve problems creatively.
● Analytical and Creative Thinker – Excellent analytical and evaluation skills and ability to think
outside the box.
● Collaborative Work Ethic ability to toggle between independent and collaborative work as
needed.
LOCATION: Nova Scotia
WORK SCHEDULE: This is a full-time position, working generally from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday (37.5 hours/week). This position requires a combination of working in a home office environment and in community, with our community stakeholders. We offer a flexible work environment and a workplace culture committed to personal wellbeing and psychological safety.A valid Nova Scotia Driver’s License and access to a vehicle is required. Reimbursement will be paid as per the Expense Policy.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Hours of work are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday (37.5
hours/week), with some flexibility as outlined in the Flexible Work Arrangements Policy. This
position requires a combination of working in a home office environment and in community with our
stakeholders. We offer a workplace culture committed to personal wellbeing and psychological
safety. A valid Nova Scotia Driver’s License and access to a vehicle is required. Reimbursement will
be paid at a per/kilometre rate.
EQUIPMENT: The employer will provide necessary office equipment as outlined in the Working from
Home policy for the employee’s use while employed with CMHA NS. The employee is required to
have reliable high-speed internet.
COMPENSATION: : Commensurate with experience. Range: Level II $55,000 to 60,000 (fair market value within the sector)
