Canadian Mental Health Association Nova Scotia Division Announces Kathy Murphy as Interim Executive Director

The Board of Directors of the Canadian Mental Health Association Nova Scotia Division [CMHA NS] is thrilled to welcome Kathy Murphy as our new Interim Executive Director. Kathy brings extensive experience leading non-for-profit organizations that provide services over large geographical areas.

“We are confident that, with her skills and background, she will lead CMHA NS Division in an inclusive, and empathic way, using the strategic plan and current efforts to continue to build on the legacy of renewed collaboration,” says David Benoit, Chair of the Board of Directors at CMHA Nova Scotia.

Kathy officially took on the role on Monday, August 12 and will be the Interim Executive Director for a period not to exceed six months, or sooner, when a permanent Executive Director is selected.

In accepting the role, Kathy had the following to say: “I am honoured to work with the very qualified and capable board and staff of the Canadian Mental Health Association Nova Scotia Division. Many of us are affected by mental health issues either directly or indirectly, at some point in our lives. The work of the Canadian Mental Health Association at the national and provincial level is critical to the health and well-being of Canadians. I am looking forward to supporting the CMHA Nova Scotia Division team in building on their excellent work, while dispelling the myths and stigmas surrounding mental illnesses.”

Kathy adds that she looks forward to collaborating with key partners around the province and across Canada to re-imagine mental health care for the future.

The Board of Directors thanks Karn Nichols for her dedication and leadership, as former Executive Director. Karn served in her role from June 2021 to June 2024.

The Board also recognizes Shobha Gashus, who, as Administrative and Operations Lead, has provided stabilization and support for the team since Karn’s official departure in June.
