November 20 -26 is National Addictions Awareness Week
Oct 28, 2022
Nov. 20 to 26 is National Addictions Awareness Week (NAAW). Led by the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse and Addiction (CCSA), National Addictions Awareness Week highlights ways to address harms related to alcohol and other drugs. It also provides an opportunity for people to learn more about prevention, treatment and recovery, and to share solutions.
Addiction does not discriminate, it affects all walks of life. Addiction does not discriminate and affects people of all ethnicities and socioeconomic classes. This could be your colleague, your friend, or someone in your own family. The campaign urges Canadians to come together and work towards reducing the stigma and stereotypes around substance use, addiction and recovery.
To increase awareness of and reduce stigma, CMHA NS Division encourages Nova Scotians to S.T.O.P. and consider whether language used:
- Stereotypes people with substance use issues?
- Trivializes people with substance use issues?
- Offends people with substance use concerns?
- Patronizes people with substance use issues by treating them as if they were not as good as other people?
NAAW is an opportunity for all Canadians to learn more about substance use care, misuse, prevention, and treatment.
The theme for NAAW this year is A Community of Caring.
During NAAW, the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse and Addiction will be sharing resources that were developed with partners across Canada who care. These resources can be used to help inform others, initiate important conversations or assist individuals who use substances or have a substance use disorder on their wellness journey. The resource list will be available on November 20 here.
CMHA NS Division offers barrier free, evidence-based mental health programming and education across the province. We are committed to ensuring this programming is accessible and meets the evolving mental health needs of Nova Scotians.
