CMHA NS Division Statement on removal of crisis shelters

The Canadian Mental Health Association is deeply troubled by the removal of crisis shelters and encampments in HRM on August 18.

Housing is a BASIC HUMAN RIGHT and a requirement for good health. When housing is inadequate or unavailable, personal as well as community well-being can suffer.

To promote the well-being and mental health of all Nova Scotians we need safe, affordable, equitable housing.

In addition to our own commitment to support affordable housing for people with mental illnesses and substance use issues, CMHA calls on the provincial government to address the root causes of homelessness and housing insecurity by funding and supporting initiatives that support the social determinants of health for all Nova Scotians.
